In this talk, I will cover and discuss the main topics addressed in my past research work, focusing on the understanding and investigation of the thermo(hygro)mechanical behaviour of high-Cr steels and polymer composites subjected to different environment and loading conditions. I will be introducing the instruments and numerical tools designed to monitor and incorporate the material features within commercial simulation software. My research work consists in developing mixed experimental and modelling investigations geared towards the study of the local lead deformation mechanisms common in these materials, with regards to thermomechanical performance, extended lifetime and sustainability. In particular, advanced experimental and computational investigations have been developed during my past research work to interrelate thermomechanical energy terms and damage effects at different scales of analysis.

L’étude du comportement des matériaux polymères et composites, qu’ils soient synthétiques ou biologiques / bio-sourcés, passe généralement par le prisme de l’analyse des relations structure-propriétés. Cette démarche scientifique est essentielle car elle permet de faire le lien entre la structure physico-chimique de ces matériaux, ses évolutions et les différentes propriétés qui en découlent.  Pour cela, il est souvent nécessaire de mettre en place diverses caractérisations (e.g. spectroscopie diélectrique, analyse calorimétrique) afin d’analyser la matière avec différentes sondes (électrique, thermique, moléculaire, …) à différentes échelles. La corrélation de ces techniques d’analyse, mettant en jeu différentes physiques, est alors indispensable afin de comprendre au mieux le comportement du matériau étudié. Dans le cas des systèmes polymères biologiques (protéines pures, amas cellulaires, tissus biologiques, …), l’utilisation de ces techniques d’analyse, classiques dans le domaine des polymères, peut s’avérer particulièrement efficaces associées à l’expertise des biologistes et médecins.

Au travers de deux cas d’application distincts, cette présentation aura pour objectif de mettre en avant des exemples de caractérisations multi-physiques pour l’analyse des relations structure-propriétés. Le premier cas d’application traitera de l’étude du vieillissement physico-chimique d’un polymère en environnement sévère. Le but étant de montrer comment la corrélation de différentes techniques d’analyse permet de mettre en évidence les évolutions de la structure physico-chimique du polymère. Le deuxième cas d’application se concentrera sur la caractérisation de tissus biologiques par spectroscopie diélectrique pour une application dans le domaine médicale.

Liquid metal embrittlement (LME) is a phenomenon in which a solid ductile metal behaves brittle under plastic deformation when in close contact with liquid metal. Its occurrence depends on various factors, including the solid/liquid interface, the chemical compositions of the metals, the metallurgical state of the solid, and the strain rate. Several proposed mechanisms explain specific cases of LME, but there is currently no model that comprehensively explains or predicts its occurrence. Furthermore, certain aspects of this phenomenon remain underexplored. Notably, limited information is available regarding the embrittlement of reactive metal pairs, and there is an absence of publications on the in situ observation of this phenomenon.
This study aims to expand our understanding of two specific aspects of LME: embrittlement of reactive couples and in situ observation. The investigation focuses on Cu and α-brasses in contact with the liquid eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn). Cu and α-brasses are monophasic, while EGaIn remains liquid at room temperature, exhibiting low toxicity and vapour pressure.
The contact conditions between the solid and the liquid were quantified by measuring static and dynamic contact angles. The intermetallic formation was characterized using SEM and ToF-SIMS analyses. Miniaturized mechanical tests were conducted under varying strain rates and different metallurgical states of the alloys to assess the impact of these variables on LME susceptibility. The LME phenomenon was observed in situ at two scales within an SEM. The mechanical conditions during testing were determined using the Finite Element Method, allowing their correlation with the onset of LME.
When LME occurs, the initial stage of the fracture exhibits ductile characteristics, such as ductility dimples and gradual crack propagation, which is succeeded by an intergranular fracture with brittle traits like rapid crack propagation and smooth surfaces. The brittle fracture propagation occurs through the regions with the highest plastic strain. The presence of the CuGa2 intermetallic was found not to influence LME, as it does not hinder contact between the solid and the liquid during plastic deformation. Based on observed tendencies, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon in this system appear to be connected to dislocation mobility.

The rapid development of electric vehicle (EV) market share poses both opportunities and challenges for high-strength, lightweight, and flame retardant (FR) thermoplastic composite materials. In coping with fire safety specifications for EV battery pack applications, various fire and lithium ion battery (LIB) thermal runaway testing methods have been developed to evaluate the FR performance under abusive thermal conditions. Short glass fiber filled SABIC® FR PPc (polypropylene compound) and long glass fiber filled FR STAMAX™ resin have demonstrated effective flame resistance and thermal insulation. In addition, modeling tools on the fire and LIB thermal runaway simulation and structural analysis were developed to obtain insights of the thermal exposure and predict the FRPP material’s thermomechanical responses, bridging the gaps between full pack-scale and lab-scale tests.

The motion of an ion in water is strongly affected by frictional effects from the surrounding solvent. Various theory have been put forward to characterize those effects and they feature a separability between mechanics part (short-ranged or Lennard-Jones forces) and dielectric part from the long range electrostatics. In this seminar, I will discuss in particular the time-dependent friction coming from water on monoatomic ions. This time-dependent friction (or memory) follows from the generalized Langevin Equation used to model the motion of the ion. Using numerical computation of the friction, I will explore the respective influence of the dielectric and mechanical friction, identifying a strong anticorrelation between both part.
I will conclude with some perspectives on the time-dependent friction for non-linear collective variable and the construction of coarse-grained model.

The main space agencies have identified fire safety as one of the major issues that obstruct the mission to Mars. For sure, under microgravity and low characteristic forced velocities conditions, the absence of natural convection allows to dramatically expand the time scales associated with transport and combustion processes. These anticipated trends can be associated with an increase in both soot concentration and radiative emissions, especially from the soot continuum. Radiation from soot can then be a predominant mode of heat transfer involved in non-buoyant flame spread. These issues are tackled within the context of international projects, such as SAFFIRE (SpAcecraFt FIre Experiments), a series of large-scale experiments lead by NASA aboard Cygnus spacecraft, or FLARE (Flammability Limits At REduced gravity), conducted by JAXA to establish new standards for fire resistance of materials potentially composing spacecraft.

The French contribution to these ongoing works is called DIAMONDS (Detection of Ignition and Mitigation Onboard for Non-Damaged Spacecraft). More specifically, DIAMONDS is a rig that enables short experiments of flame spread in parabolic flights. We will especially illustrate how fundamental research elaborated on ground can be designed to support applied research conducted with DIAMONDS to better understand the physics of a fire spreading in microgravity. This understanding is expected to pave the way towards efficient strategies of fire mitigation into spacecraft, such as the fire retardants whose performances are assessed in tight collaboration with Prof Bourbigot's group. Conversely, the basic flow conditions generated around the non-buoyant spreading flame can be considered an ideal configuration for the fine study of fire propagation.

Les revêtements riches en zinc sont des films anticorrosion, constitués de particules de zinc maintenues ensemble par un liant. Cette thèse s’intéresse aux mécanismes de corrosion et de mécanique-corrosion de ces revêtements sur acier dans un milieu salin (NaCl à 30 g/L). Les formules étudiées, développées par NOF Metal Coatings Europe, ont plusieurs particularités : les particules de zinc ont une géométrie lamellaire, et le liant est un sol-gel hybride organique-inorganique en phase aqueuse. Ces revêtements ont été étudiés d’un point de vue électrochimique, par Spectroscopie d’Impédance Electrochimique (SIE) notamment, et d’un point de vue microstructural, par DRX, IR et MEB. Plusieurs mécanismes ont été identifiés pour expliquer l’effet protecteur apporté par ces formules à un substrat d’acier en milieu salin. D’abord un effet cathodique, apporté par le potentiel électronégatif du zinc, assure une protection galvanique à l’acier. Le zinc réagit, s’oxyde progressivement et les produits de corrosion formés, notamment la simonkolleite, procurent alors un effet autocicatrisant au revêtement. Les oxydes protecteurs viennent ainsi colmater les défauts du film et ralentissent la diffusion des espèces chimiques agressives à travers le revêtement. Lorsque le substrat revêtu, immergé dans le milieu corrosif, subit une déformation mécanique, ce mécanisme d’autocicatrisation est limité car des fissures se forment dans le film. Le zinc est alors exposé à l’électrolyte et réagit trop rapidement pour former en quantité suffisante les oxydes protecteurs. Cependant, lorsque la déformation est suffisamment lente, un effet auto-cicatrisant efficace peut se mettre en place et apporter une protection temporaire.

L'interaction entre les particules à haute énergie et les métaux causant des dommages primaires par rayonnement a été largement étudiée en utilisant la dynamique moléculaire. Cinq potentiels interatomiques pour le système ternaire FeNiCr différant soit par leur partie d'équilibre soit par la procédure de durcissement ont été inclus dans cette étude qui a été largement caractérisée. Le facteur prédominant de ce travail est d'analyser de larges données de plus de 15000 cascades sur l'alliage Ni et FeNiCr, y compris des énergies de cascade allant de 0,5 keV à 120 keV en utilisant plusieurs potentiels interatomiques. Le nombre total de défauts, leurs groupes et leurs distributions de taille sont analysés à l'aide de la méthode de régression linéaire multiple multivariée sur des descripteurs de dommages primaires spécifiques et des descripteurs de morphologie. Les effets des potentiels et de l'énergie de cascade sont analysés sur la base de différentes énergies de cascade qui sont au-dessus et en dessous du seuil de sous-cascade en utilisant la même méthode statistique. Les résultats de l'analyse du Ni pur seront comparés aux résultats des matériaux bcc (fer et tungstène). Il sera également comparé au FeNiCr pour comprendre l'effet de l'alliage. Grâce au grand nombre de données disponibles, les cascades atypiques ont été caractérisées et leur impact sur les dommages primaires analysé.
