Architectured Microstructure Materials
The research theme Architectured Microstructure Materials consists of the following permanent staff: Abubakar ALIYU, Marie-Noëlle Avettand-Fénoël, David BALLOY, Franck BéCLIN, Catherine CORDIER, Hugo DESMARCHELIER, Loïc GAY, Chloé GRANDJEAN, Gang JI, Rajesh KUMARI RAJENDRAN, Guy REUMONT, Rajashekhara SHABADI, Matthieu TOUZIN. David Balloy is managing it.
We focus on the elaboration and the characterization of the microstructure as well as the mechanical and functional properties according to 3 topics and with the main equipments presented below.
In parallel, we undertook an approach to take into account the environmental aspects of materials and processes by the measure of the impacts by life cycle analysis (LCA).
Theme 1: Metallic Matrix Composites
- Design, elaboration and characterization of composites, graded or structured composites:
- Composites with Al, Cu, Mg matrix + Carbon or oxide reinforcements (liquid and/or solid ways),
- Graded composites with metallic matrix strengthened by ceramic particles (powder metallurgy),
- Design and characterization of metallic surfaces strengthened by Friction Stir Process (FSP),
- Metal-metal composites with controlled architecture (solid/liquid mixed way),
- Joints (Al/U) as fuel for research reactor.
- Science and engineering of the interfaces for the development of (nano)composites with high-performance metallic matrix.
Theme 2: Joints and surface treatments
- Coating and modification of the steel surfaces, alloys of copper and light alloys aluminum / magnesium (thermochemical and thermomechanical processings) for application in corrosion, optics, tribology, etc:
- Sol-gel coatings,
- Steel Galvanizing,
- Silicon enrichment, nitriding, carburizing, etc,
- Friction Stir Process of the surface.
- Correlation of the process parameters, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of heterogeneous joints:
- Soldering,
- Thermomechanical processes (Friction Stir Welding (FSW), linear Friction Welding (LFW) or Magnetic Pulses Welding (MPW)).
Theme 3: Specific materials and/or out of equilibrium
- Magnesium base alloys,
- Iron base alloys,
- High Entropy Alloys (HEA),
- Materials with representative defects of industrial damages or in controlled localization (Ni and Al bases materials),
- Ceramics (Powder metallurgy, sol-gel).
Means of the team
